Destination: The Gettysburg Battlefield & the Shenandoah National Park

Tuesday - Day 3

This page has pictures from inside the Gettysburg National Park visitors center and around the National Cemetery where Lincoln gave the Gettysburg address and where the soldiers were buried after the three days of battle.

We left Gettysburg and headed southeast on SR-97 to SR-194 and took it southwest to Frederick, MD.  At Frederick we got on US-15/340 and went south to where they split and we took US-15 south to VA-672 west to SR-287 south to Purcellville, VA and hit BUS.-7 west.  We ran it a very short distance to VA-690 southwest to VA-611 to VA-713 to VA-710.  These "VA" routes where secondary highways and allowed us to view many horse farms and the beautiful scenery that abounds in Virginia.  We finally hit SR-55, after a short ride on US-17, and headed west over to Front Royal, VA (via SR-55) where the Shenandoah National Park Skyline Drive starts.  The Skyline Drive runs 105 miles south and ends at I-64 near Waynesboro, VA where the Blue Ridge Parkway begins it's southwestern run for 469 miles.  We had been lucky so far on this ride and haven't hit any bad weather until we got into the upper regions of the Skyline Drive.  The fog and clouds were closing in on us the further we went south.  Finally the remains of hurricane Katrina caught up with us and we hit the worst rain, fog and clouds that me or Dave have ever rode in.  In 35 years of motorcycle riding each, that speaks for itself.  After darkness fell and the rain and fog hit us we finally had to exit off the Skyline Drive at US-33 and headed west to a lower elevation.  At Elkton, VA we jumped on US-340 and headed south to Waynesboro, VA and eventually ended up at our motel room in Waynesboro at around 10 pm.  We were soaked to the bone.  I put on a rain jacket, but left the pants off and Dave didn't bring a rain suit with him.  Dave could ring water out of his tee shirt under his leather jacket, which was soaked and weighed about 30 pounds.  Total: 244 miles.
